MOD16A2.061 availability on Google Earth Engine

by nikolina_mileva » Fri May 12, 2023 12:05 pm America/New_York

Hello,

when would MOD16A2.061 be available on Google Earth Engine? Currently, there is only the older version (006).

Thanks.

Hi,
That would be a question for Google Earth Engine. GEE is not an LPDAAC site so we would have no idea on this. Because the MOD16A2 is a temporary product they may not. But that would be a questions for them.
Thanks,
Brett

The Earth Engine collection MODIS/061/MOD16A2 is actually present and being updated, but we haven't added this dataset to the catalog yet. Thank you for the reminder, will do so shortly.

Best,
Simon

Thanks. It looks like currently the product is available only from 2021 onwards. When is it planned to upload the rest of the years on GEE?

This is a question for NASA - the dataset is only available starting from 2021: https://e4ftl01.cr.usgs.gov/MOLT/MOD16A2.061/

Hi @nikolina_mileva I am looking into seeing if the MOD16A2 data will be available prior to 2021 or not, and if so if we have an expected timeline for the release. In the meantime, I encourage you to look at the Gap-Filled product: https://doi.org/10.5067/MODIS/MOD16A2GF.061 which is an improved product and has data from 2000 to 2021. We are working on processing 2022 currently. It should be available soon. "The MOD16A2GF will be generated at the end of each year when the entire yearly 8-day MOD15A2H is available. Hence, the gap-filled MOD16A2GF is the improved MOD16, which has cleaned the poor-quality inputs from 8-day Leaf Area Index and Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (LAI/FPAR) based on the Quality Control (QC) label for every pixel. If any LAI/FPAR pixel did not meet the quality screening criteria, its value is determined through linear interpolation. However, users cannot get MOD16A2GF in near-real time because it will be generated only at the end of a given year."

Hello @nikolina_mileva and @earthengine_urs We just heard back from the MODIS Science Team. The MOD16A2 6.1 product will not have data prior to 2021. I have a note for our team to update our DOI Landing Page to reflect this. The MODIS Science team recommends using the gap filled MOD16A2GF 6.1 product for data from 2000 – 2021 -- and then also 2022 when the data are available. They recommend this as the gap filled product is expected to be superior in product quality, especially over areas where otherwise the routine product performance would have been negatively impacted by cloudy or poor quality input observations. For the current year, there will not be a gap filled product until early the following year (i.e. 2023 data should be available in early 2024). So, if a user needs MOD16A2GF 6.1 data for the year 2023 (or the "current" year in the future) they recommend using the MOD16A2 6.1 product, which is generated using the daily observation with climatology observation replacing for the cloudy or poor quality observations.

Hi @earthengine_urs, will the gap filled MOD16A2GF 6.1 product be available on the Google Earth Engine platform in the near future?
