MOD09A1 on 2001-06-18 missing
Dear all,
I am searching the archives for the MOD09A1 product with starting date 2001-06-18 which is somehow missing (in both versions V006 and V061) at USGS and NASA archives also 2001-06-26 seems to be corrupted. Are these known issues? Can anybody help me with this?
Kind regards,
Niklas

Hi @nneckel Terra MODIS had an outage from June 15, 2001 - July 3, 2001. You can see a list of outages here: https://modaps.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/services/production/outages_terra.html. That is why we do not have data for 6-18-2001. I will have our team take a look at the 6-26-2001 data and we will report back when we have more information. Thank you- Danielle

Hello @nneckel is there a specific scene or a few scenes that you think are corrupted? We'd like to look into those scenes further. If you could provide the HVs that would be tremendously helpful. Thank you, Danielle

Dear Danielle,
thank you for your message. Please find an image of an Arctic-wide mosaic of MOD09A1 data acquired on 2001-06-26 attached to this mail. I also uploaded the original hdf files to ftp.awi.de/public/nneckel/MODIS/2020-06-26. For downloading please use the ftp settings attached.
Kind Regards,
Niklas

Hi @nneckel The FTP site is timing out for me. Could you please tell us what the granule ID or tile number is (the HxxVxx)? Thanks.

Hi @nneckel Thank you for sending over those granule IDs. Just to confirm, how did you access the data. Was there any pre-processing before or when you mosaicked them? Did you access them through the LP's Data Pool, Earthdata Search, AppEEARS, GEE? Thank you!

Re: MOD09A1 on 2001-06-18 missing
I downloaded them from https://e4ftl01.cr.usgs.gov/MOLT/MOD09A1.061/ and apply a re-projection to EPSG:3413 before mosaicing them. The same procedure works well for the rest of the time series, this is why I am wondering.
All the Best,
Niklas

Re: MOD09A1 on 2001-06-18 missing
Hi Niklas,
Sorry for the delay. We contacted the Science Team and the product developers on the corruption issues. Technically they don't consider it corrupted as much as the inability and challenges of the sensor to acquire data in the very high latitudes. They said: "the light blue area is either the day-night boundary or that the solar angle is less than 80 degrees, in which case the correction could be unreliable." Sorry I don't have better news, it is not a processing issue but an acquisition issue and there is not much that can be done about that. The rule of thumb is to first mosaic and then reproject which may clean things up a little, but maybe you have tried this however.
Thanks,
Brett
