LP DAAC Announces Upcoming Release Schedule for VIIRS Version 2 Products

The LP DAAC has updated the release schedule for the NASA Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Version 2 land data products. The VIIRS Version 2 release will include data products from both the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-20 (NOAA-20) satellite which was previously called Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1). The initial release covers the joint mission period from year 2018 up to the leading edge. This will be followed by a second reprocessing effort covering the Suomi NPP mission period from the beginning of the mission in 2012 through 2017.

The initial release is scheduled for the middle of June 2023 and will begin with Land Surface Reflectance data products (VNP09s/VJ109s). Other product suites will follow at regular intervals in the weeks and months after. These will include Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity (VNP21s/VJ121s), Vegetation Indices (VNP13s/VJ113s), tiled Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) and Albedo (VNP43IA/MAs & VJ143IA/MAs), Leaf Area Index (LAI) and Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FPAR) (VNP15A2H/VJ115A2H) and Thermal Anomalies and Fire (VNP14s/VJ114s) products. The VIIRS Earth Science Data Records for Version 2 will include additional data products to provide continuity with MODIS land science products. Further announcements will be posted as more information becomes available.

Details on product improvements for Version 2 will be provided on the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) landing page for each product. Suomi NPP VIIRS Version 1 data products will remain available for distribution and will continue with forward processing during the transition.

VIIRS Version 2 data products will be hosted on NASA’s Earthdata Cloud and will be available for download through NASA’s Earthdata Search.
