We recently received a question from a user that we think others in the community might be wondering about too:
Why is there no 8day data for MOD17A3?

Re: Why is there no 8day data for MOD17A3?
The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) decommissioned the Terra MODIS Net Primary Production Yearly L4 Global 1 km SIN Grid (MOD17HA3) data product on April 6, 2020. This annual product is no longer distributed by the LP DAAC or available for download from NASA’s Earthdata Search, Data Pool, or AppEEARS.
The improved MODIS MOD/MYD17A3HGF Gap-Filled dataset at 500 m spatial resolution has been available since November 2019, allowing the MODIS community to transition from the non Gap Filled MOD/MYD17A3H product over that time.
Please note the 8-day MOD/MYD17A2H (non-gap filled) product is still produced. However, this dataset is only available temporarily until the MOD/MYD17A2GF (gap-filed version) is released. Once the gap-filled product is released, the 8-day MOD/MYD17A2H (non-gap filled) product is removed, as the MOD17A3GF is an annual product, it was decided there was no need to maintain the MOD/MYD17A3 product.

Re: Why is there no 8day data for MOD17A3?
Thank you for sharing this important update regarding the Terra MODIS data products from LP DAAC. It's crucial information for the MODIS community, and I appreciate you bringing it to our attention.
The decommissioning of the Terra MODIS Net Primary Production Yearly L4 Global 1 km SIN Grid (MOD17HA3) data product on April 6, 2020, marks a significant transition. I'm glad to hear that an improved dataset, the MODIS MOD/MYD17A3HGF Gap-Filled dataset, has been available since November 2019. The higher spatial resolution of 500 meters is definitely a step forward and allows for more detailed analyses.
I would also like to emphasize the importance of the forthcoming MOD/MYD17A2GF (gap-filled version) release. While the 8-day MOD/MYD17A2H (non-gap filled) product is still accessible temporarily, it's reassuring to know that LP DAAC is actively working on providing a more comprehensive dataset to replace it. This transition should ultimately enhance the quality and reliability of the data available to the community.
Understanding that the MOD17A3GF is an annual product, the decision to discontinue the MOD/MYD17A3 product makes sense from a data management perspective. Streamlining datasets can help in focusing resources on maintaining and improving the most relevant and valuable data for users.
Once again, thank you for sharing this update, and I look forward to working with the improved MODIS datasets in the future. If anyone has questions or further insights to add, please feel free to chime in.
Best regards,
