by EarthdataForumContributor » Mon Apr 20, 2020 11:44 am America/New_York

Contacting you regarding the availability of the SSE database ( I used the site extensively a few years
ago and am just coming back to it for a new project. The site is saying
that it is down for maintenance. When will the site be available?

On June 13, 2018 the old SSE web site was replaced with the new data web portal at with improved solar and meteorology data and greatly enhanced capabilities to facilitate access to NASA's solar insolation and meteorological data parameters. Rest assured that all parameters currently on SSE are now available at the new POWER web site although the parameters might be organized differently.

A new users guide (/data-access-viewer/POWER_DAV_USER_GUIDE.pdf) and API documentation (/docs/v1/) have been developed to ease the transition to the new web portal.

Here are "Quick Start" instructions for accessing solar and meteorological data.

Solar and meteorological parameters can be accessed in the POWER web site via the Data Access Viewer (DAV) When the DAV page opens you may click the “Access Data” box and/or check the “Do not show ...” box to avoid loading the splash Page on subsequent visits.
1. In the DAV page that is now visible, in Section 1 select "SSE-Renewable Energy" or "Sustainable Buildings" or "Agroclimatology".
2. Section 2. Select "Daily", or "Interannual, or Climatology.
3. Section 3. Enter the site latitude and longitude.
4. In Section 4, Select the Time Extent (Enter Start time and End time).
5. In Section 5, Select Output File Format of your choice.
6. In Section 6, Select Folders of your choice pertaining to your research.
The parameters that are available for the Select User Community and Time Extent are listed in Parameters Folders. Each folder can be opened by clicking on the intersection of the horizontal and vertical branch associated with each folder. Individual data parameters are selected/deselected by clicking on each parameters or all parameters in a folder can be selected/deselected by clicking on the folder itself.
7. Click the “Submit” button in Section 7. The resulting page will provide time series plots of the selected data parameters. To download data in the previously selected format click the appropriate box under the "Output Files".

Use of POWER Data: When POWER data products are used in a publication, we request the following acknowledgment be included:
"These data were obtained from the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) POWER Project funded through the NASA Earth Science/Applied Science Program."

Reprints Please: The POWER Project kindly requests a reference, web link and/or a reprint of any published papers or reports or a brief description of other uses (e.g., posters, oral presentations, etc.) of data products that we have distributed. This will help us determine the use of data that we distribute, which is helpful in optimizing product development. It also helps us to assess our value to the community. Please contact us at POWER Project Team for additional information on sending reference material.

Redistribution of Data: To assist the POWER Project in providing the best service to the scientific community, we request notification if you transmit POWER data to other researchers.

Additionally, if you have questions about the data or how to use it, please feel free to ask experts your questions on the Earthdata Forum.
