MODIS 8 Day or 16 Day Composite

by anudeep » Wed Feb 21, 2024 6:31 am America/New_York

Hello,

Does the 8 Day composite or 16 Day Composite period of MODIS data refer to the 8days prior to the reported date or following?
For example if the data is 'MOD15A2H.A2004001.h12v09.061.2020118213425.hdf', does it means the data is from 25th Dec to 1st Jan or 1st Jan to 8th Jan?

Hello,
Yes, the day mentioned is the first day of the composite period, so in your example the period would be from January 1 through the 8th of January. This is true with all MODIS/VIIRS products, with one exception. That exception is the MCD43 BRDF/Albedo products. Those are 16 day products, but the day there is the 9th day of the 16 day period. The MCD43s are the only exception.
Thanks,
Brett
