Data missing in CALIPSO Lidar Level 2 Polar Stratospheric Cloud data product

by ille » Fri Mar 29, 2024 8:06 am America/New_York

Hi,
There are some anomalies in the data:
https://asdc.larc.nasa.gov/data/CALIPSO/LID_L2_PSCMask-Standard-V2-00/

1.- PSC Months missing: 02/2016
2.- Days missing: 09/2017, 08/2017, 07/2017, 03/2016, 01/2016
3.- Days much smaller in size than the rest of the days in the month: 02/07/2019, 01/17/2018, 09/25/2018, 03/26/2017, many more.

I am checking the period 2021-2015 at the moment, but I need to use until 2009.
Do you know what can be the cause? Can it be fixed?
Thank you very much.
~IG

There are multiple times during the course of the mission when CALIPSO is in a non-data acquisition mode and is not collecting data. All of the gaps in the data noted in this question can be found by referencing:
1) Data availability page: https://www-calipso.larc.nasa.gov/tools/data_avail/
2) Instrument anomaly page: https://www-calipso.larc.nasa.gov/tools/instrument_status/

1.- PSC Months missing: 02/2016
GPS anomaly, payload commanded to SAFE (no science data) from January 28, 2016 at 16:14:11 UTC to March 14, 2016 at 17:35:37 UTC

2.- Days missing: 09/2017, 08/2017, 07/2017, 03/2016, 01/2016
Instrument anomaly page shows that for these days are missing for very specific reasons; 9/2017 due solar events, 8/2017 due to laser fault, 7/2017 due to solar events, 3/2016 due to the GPS anomaly, and 1/2016 due to the GPS anomaly.

3.- Days much smaller in size than the rest of the days in the month: 02/07/2019, 01/17/2018, 09/25/2018, 03/26/2017, many more.
Refer to instrument anomaly page. For instance, 2/7/2019, as noted by the page, was due to inability to downlink the data (Due to a USN ground station anomaly, science data is missing on February 6, 2019 at 23:10:54 UTC to February 07, 2019 at 22:07:08 UTC.)
