NOAA-20 Rephasing Campaign Scheduled March 20 to April 4, 2024

by LP DAAC - jwilson » Fri Mar 29, 2024 3:56 pm America/New_York

On March 20, 2024, NOAA-20 executed a propulsive maneuver to begin the rephasing campaign to provide a 180-degree separation between the NOAA-20 (JPSS-1) and NOAA-21 (JPSS-2) platforms. NOAA-20 will drift at a lower altitude for approximately 16 days as the orbit shifts 180 degrees with respect to NOAA-21. On April 4, 2024, plans call for performing a maneuver to raise the orbit to the correct altitude.

The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard NOAA-20 will remain functional during this drift period although the satellite will not meet its orbit or altitude requirement specifications. All NOAA-20 VIIRS standard Level-1 data products acquired and processed during this rephasing campaign will remain non-public until corrected and evaluated for radiometric and geometric disposition, quality, etc. Missing granules and data degradation are expected. The rephasing campaign impacts all NOAA-20 VIIRS land data products(https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/product_search/?collections=NOAA-20+VIIRS&status=Operational&view=cards&sort=title) archived and distributed by LP DAAC.
