Forward Processing for VIIRS Version 1 Ends June 17, 2024

by LP DAAC - jwilson » Tue Jun 11, 2024 10:53 am America/New_York

Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Version 1 (Collection 1) land data products will cease forward processing on June 17, 2024. VIIRS Version 1 data products will remain available for distribution as additional Version 2 data products are released. LP DAAC strongly encourages users to transition to VIIRS Version 2 (Collection 2).

The VIIRS Earth Science Data Records for Version 2 offer new data products from both the NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-20 (NOAA-20) satellites to provide continuity with MODIS land science products. The complete list of VIIRS Version 2 datasets is listed in the VIIRS Products Table.

VIIRS Version 2 also includes the following improvements over Version 1 data:

Additional land data products aligned with MODIS Collection 6.1 algorithms, enabling a longer-term, multi-sensor climate data record
Improved cloud masking
Improved geolocation accuracy
