STREAM FAQ

by LAADS - william.wainwright » Thu Jul 25, 2024 1:31 pm America/New_York

What is STREAM?
STREAM is the combination of a remote sensing water quality estimation tool and a responsive website and API for visualization and data access. We aim to offer well-calibrated water quality products such as Chlorophyll-a, TSS, and Secchi depth within hours of the satellite data being made available.

How does STREAM work?
STREAM has two major components that make data available to you, the processing code backend and the website & API front end. The processing is done by a python framework to correct Level-1 satellite data (top of atmosphere reflectance) for atmospheric effects to yield remote sensing reflectance (RRS). Then we use a finely tuned mixture density network (MDN) to estimate several water quality indicators from the RRS. These products are then made available via the web API and website interfaces. If you’re interested in more of the specifics, we have publications on most of the details, and you are welcome to reach out with questions!

How do I use STREAM?
A video guide for using STREAM can be found below, and a written guide can be found here: viewtopic.php?p=19314.

Who is the team?
The team behind STREAM is relatively small!
William Wainwright is the developer for STREAM front end and backend.
Navid Golpayegani is the technical lead and enables the infrastructure STREAM runs on.
Akash Ashapure develops and improves most of the MDN-based correction.
Arun Saranathan enables uncertainty estimation of MDN results.
Nima Pahlevan founded the project and now advises the team.

What areas are currently supported?
We offer coverage of a variety of sites around the continental US, as well as Hawaii, South America, Africa, and Asia. On our tile search page is a map highlighting the tiles we process daily as well as a shapefile for your convenience. https://ladsweb.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/stream/coverage

What satellites and missions are supported?
We currently support Sentinel-2, both A and B. Landsat 8 & 9 support is fully integrated into the system and should be online in the next few weeks. We fully intend to include support for more satellites soon, and we will make announcements when their products have been added to STREAM.

How frequently are sites revisited?
This depends on the satellite, but for Sentinel-2 it’s usually 5 days, and for Landsat it is 8 days.

How quickly is the data processed?
Once downloaded to our system, the processing time typically takes around 3 hours to be available on STREAM. We are hoping to bring this time down in future revisions of our processing code.

Can I process my own data?
We have good news for you! We will be releasing a standalone verions of the processing backbone of STREAM in the next few months. The feature set of this code is planned to include patch-based processing of user-supplied Sentinel-2 or Landsat 8/9 scenes for rapid water quality estimation of any dataset, whether it is covered by STREAM or not.

What features are being worked on?
In addition to the improved processing code behind STREAM and the addition of Landsat 8/9, we have a few more features planned. Time series analysis tools are our most requested feature, and we intend to make this available as soon as we can. We will also be adding RGB or true color maps as a product category alongside water-surface temperature. Map overlays such as the satellite tiling grids and a display of tiles that we cover versus those we do not are also a priority. Improving the user interface is also high on our list.

How can I leave feedback or report an issue?
You can leave feedback, questions, or comments via our feedback form here: . Additionally, you can make forum posts with the STREAM tag on the Earthdata forums.

Can I get sites added to STREAM?
We hope to cover and support as many sites and regions of interest as possible, but we are limited by our processing capabilities and funding. If you represent a team or project and would like to work with STREAM and make a case for sites being added, please feel free to contact Will Wainwright.

Morning, I'd like to use STREAM to process satellite data for UK rivers/lakes. Is there a version of the project I can use to do this?
