LAADS DAAC HTTP Error 401: Unauthorized

by duncanwp » Thu Aug 22, 2024 5:40 pm America/New_York

Hi, I'm trying to download a whole year of MYD06 data and have setup the bash script and token as instructed but the files are all just html login pages. When I try with just wget I get a 401 Unauthorized 'Username/Password Authentication Failed.' so I guess that's the problem. My token definitely matches the one I generated in the Earthdata login page. Is there a delay in syncing it to the LAADS server?

Is there an easier way of accessing this data? A number of blog posts talk about cloud access of the data but I can't see anything that actually points to where that is and how I can download from there.

Thanks in advance,

Duncan

No, there is no delay in syncing Earthdata token to the LAADS server. If your Earthdata token is not expired (it expires every 90 days, so check expiration date of your token on Generate Token page) you should not get 401 error.

Try using the wget command-line utility by running the command below using your Earthdata Download Token (EDL) in place of INSERT_EDL_TOKEN_HERE, in your preferred terminal:
wget -e robots=off -m -np -R .html,.tmp -nH --cut-dirs=3 "https://ladsweb.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/archive/allData/61/MYD06_L2/2012/" --header "Authorization: Bearer INSERT_EDL_TOKEN_HERE" -P .

** change "2012" with the year you want to download data for.
