intermittent download success

I'm finding less than 50% success when downloading SMAP L4 granules with python requests. Sometimes the download is super fast, but a lot of the time it just hangs.
For example, i just had a blazing fast download of https://data.nsidc.earthdatacloud.nasa.gov/nsidc-cumulus-prod-protected/SMAP/SPL4SMGP/008/2020/10/31/SMAP_L4_SM_gph_20201031T013000_Vv8010_001.h5, but I had to ctl-c twice to stop the program and try again.

OPENDAP seems to be totally broken, but that's another query.

file download seems to be working this afternoon, but the experience this morning makes me question whether it makes sense to shift off the NSIDC links.

Hi fstony,

I apologize for the delay in my response! Are you still experiencing this issue?

Kind regards,
Amy

I have similar intermittent download issues. I can download a few files, then it hangs and fails out after a while. I work on the NASA NCCS machines, not clear to me whether this is a NCCS network issue or if earthdata is simply throttling user downloads. That said, it doesn’t seem to happen based on data size, I can download 1GB and it will still then hit a brick wall on the next download, or other times I’ll download 100GB before I hit the brick wall.

Hi Zachary,

I had our operations team at the NSIDC review your past data orders and can confirm that they are successful on our end, so you are likely experiencing a network issue.

Fstony - we also only see successful orders on our end, indicating a network issue.

If you are downloading from a workplace or campus, I would recommend talking to your system administrator. Otherwise, you could try your download from a different network.

Kind regards,
Amy
