Overpass predictor range results

by mwraenqual » Fri Mar 20, 2026 2:15 pm America/New_York

Hello. I am looking to better understand how to interpret the range results when using the overpass predictor tool (https://oceandata.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/overpass_pred/). Is there a range value that would indicate a pass that was beyond a satellite's viewing range? I have had 1000 km recommended for MODISA but was unsure if this would still be acceptable for PACE-OCI.

Here is a pretty good video on orbital mechanics, describing how to interpret the values you see using the Overpass Predictor.
