37th COSPAR Scientific Assembly, Montreal, 13-20 July 2008

The Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) promotes on an international level scientific
research in space, with emphasis on the exchange of results, information and opinions, and
provides a forum, open to all scientists, for the discussion of problems that may affect
scientific space research.

COSPAR organizes a biennial Scientific Assembly, with strong contributions from most
countries engaged in space research. The meeting allows the presentation of the latest
scientific results, the exchange of knowledge and also the discussion of space research
problems. The COSPAR Scientific Assembly has become the premier forum for presenting the
most important results in space research in all disciplines and as the focal point for
truly international space science.

COSPAR publishes ³Advances in Space Research², a peer-refereed journal to disseminate sc
ientificresults. COSPAR advises, as required, the United Nations and other intergovernmen
tal
organizations on space research matters and provides an assessment of the utilization of
space to advance scientific issues. COSPAR strives to promote the use of space science
for the benefit of mankind and for its adoption by developing countries and new
space-faring nations.

You are invited to participate in the 37th COSPAR Scientific Assembly in Montreal, Canada,
on 13-20 July 2008. Information on the COSPAR Scientific Assembly, including venue and

The COSPAR Scientific Commission A on Space Studies of the Earth¹s Surface, Meteorology a
nd
Climate has organized an exciting program. Symposium A11 is entitled ³Atmospheric Remoted

Sensing: Surface Layer, Troposphere, Stratosphere and Climate², and the Main Scientific
Organizer (MSO) is Dr.
Edward Llewellyn. Symposium A21 is entitled ³Ocean Processes and Operational Oceanograph
y:
Combining Space and In Situ Data With Models², with MSO Dr. Patrick Vincent. Symposium A

is entitled ³Space Data Utilization for Earth², with MSO Dr. Nadine Gobron. Each sympos
ium willcover many important topics, and additional information is described at
http://www.cospar-assembly.org.

You are invited to contribute a presentation or presentations to Symposium A11, A21 and
A31. Deadline for abstracts is 17:59 EST (5:59pm) on Sunday, 17 February 2008.

Two plenary lectures will be of interest. At 08:00-09:15 on Tuesday, 15 July, Dr. Charles
Elachi, Director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), will present the COSPAR
Interdisciplinary Plenary Lecture on Earth¹s changing environment. At 17:00-17:45 onT
Thursday, 17 July, Dr. Michael Freilich, Director of the Earth Science Division of the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), will present the Symposium A01
Scientific Commission A Plenary Lecture on global integrated Earth system science.
Symposium A01, while open to everyone, will not have contributed presentations.

Scientific Commission A will hold four Business Meetings, one for each Scientific
Sub-Commission on Atmosphere (A1), on Ocean (A2), and on Land (A3), and a plenary (A) for
everyone to exchange disciplinary and interdisciplinary ideas. All participants are
encouraged to attend the Business Meetings.
