TEMPO Earthdata Search Question

by ASDC - micook » Mon Dec 22, 2025 12:26 pm America/New_York

This question was posted on behalf of the user.

I am looking through what's available for TEMPO through Earthdata. I specified my time window to encompass a date of interest (i.e., 07/29/2025). However, it looks like there are no available products for this time (see screenshot Do you all keep an extended archive somewhere for researchers to access older data? This would be an excellent opportunity to examine TEMPO O3 with respect to NASA's ozone lidar network in the Baltimore area along with aircraft measurements that day. This work will be presented at AMS next month: https://ams.confex.com/ams/106ANNUAL/meetingapp.cgi/Paper/466446. Let me know if more information is needed.

The answer was provided by the TEMPO SME: Georgina Hayes-Crepps

Thank you for reaching out with your question. All TEMPO data are archived in Earthdata Search (https://search.earthdata.nasa.gov/). The current version of TEMPO data is version 04, which has data from September 17, 2025 – present. Version 03 data covers from August 2023 – September 16, 2025. The TEMPO Science Team will begin reprocessing the Version 03 into Version 04 data in 2026. However, that does mean currently that different time spans are covered by different TEMPO collections, in which there are some differences; please see the user guide for more details on the TEMPO project page (https://asdc.larc.nasa.gov/project/TEMPO):

In addition, the TEMPO Science Team maintains an operational log (https://github.com/Smithsonian/TEMPO-Observations-log/blob/main/daily_log.md) that details any deviations from normal TEMPO operations. The example date of interest you gave (07/29/2025) falls under this category. The log states: “07/25 - 07/28/2025: Special obs. scans: alternating hourly with FoR scans (10 min. scans over Colorado/Salt Lake City).” Because the TEMPO instrument was being used for additional scanning over the Midwest, the scanning patterns were different during this time and some other areas received fewer scans. However, there are data for 07/29/2025 for the TEMPO V03

(https://search.earthdata.nasa.gov/search?qt=2025-07-29T00%3A00%3A00.000Z%2C2025-07-29T23%3A59%3A59.999Z&fpj=TEMPO). There have been some indexing issues recently in the database behind Earthdata Search; if you were not able to see these results, it may have been during this time. If so, we apologize for the inconvenience and confusion.

Additional question from the user.

Thank you for the user guide links and a direct link to the 07/29 data. I see that there are ozone profiles and total columns and 0-2km according to the user guide. However, the link to the 07/29 data only shows a total column product for ozone. I downloaded the data to be sure. Indeed, the only data available for ozone is total column. Are there no 0-2km products out for this date yet? Will I have to wait until that comes out?

The TEMPO Ozone Profile V04 data only began production on September 17, 2025 (there were not earlier versions released to the public) so there are currently no data for 7/29/25. However, the TEMPO Science Team is working on backprocessing all of the TEMPO V03 into V04 to have all of the data in the same version for the entirety of the mission timeline so far (Aug 2023-present). This will also include a reprocessing to create TEMPO Ozone Profile data for the entire time span as well. The Science Team is expecting to start the reprocessing sometime this month (January 2026); however, with the amount of data needed to be processed, this is expected to likely take at least a year to finish (exact timeline is still being determined). As the data are reprocessed, they will be made publicly available in the collections on Earthdata Search.

So, while there will be Ozone Profile data for 7/29 eventually, I do not know when that will be exactly, but I expect it will be a while until that occurs.

Sorry for any inconvenience, but please let us know if you have any other questions we can assist with.

Regards,

Question from user:

Thanks for letting me know. What about the 0-2km product though? I'm not necessarily interested in the profile. Perhaps the 0-2km product requires the profile first.

Also, what if this is for a publication? Would anyone on the team like to collaborate on this particular day? I understand that these things take time, but could exceptions be made for a single day? I'd be happy to extend co-authorship on that and share the results that I have so far so you know what I'm trying to do.

The 0-2 km is within the “ozone_profile” variable under the “products” group in the Ozone Profile data products. The data are divided up into 24 altitude layers.

In the user guide, section 2.3.1, it says “The main product parameters are partial ozone columns with units of Dobson Unit (DU) at 24 layers from the surface to ~ 60 km with the first layer from surface to surface + 2 km (i.e., 0-2 km ozone above surface), and their random-noise and smoothing error profiles with total, stratospheric, and tropospheric ozone columns” (page 11).

The user guide does not have a lot of information about the various layers, but if you need additional information, I can follow up with the TEMPO Science Team.

Questions from user:

Thank you. Yes, I gathered that as indicated in my previous email. What about for my follow-up inquiry? Or is that too much of a lift?
