ORNL DAAC Request for New GCMD Project: Tokyo-FC

by ORNL - yaxingwei » Thu Jan 29, 2026 11:41 pm America/New_York

Hi,

The ORNL DAAC needs a new GCMD project vocabulary entry, here are the details:

Type: Project
Short name: Tokyo-FC
Long name: Tokyo Field Campaign

Description: The Tokyo Field Campaign (Tokyo-FC) is an international, multi-platform satellite validation mission scheduled for early 2026. The primary objective is the post-launch calibration and validation of geophysical data products from the Global Observing Satellite for Greenhouse gases and Water Cycle (GOSAT-GW), which was launched in June 2025. This campaign is a collaborative effort between NASA and key Japanese scientific institutions including the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). Tokyo-FC will conduct intensive, correlative observations to assess the accuracy and precision of GOSAT-GW's retrieved data. The campaign will focus on measurements within the complex atmospheric and environmental conditions in and near the greater Tokyo metropolitan area. To achieve its validation goals, the mission will deploy a coordinated suite of observational assets, including airborne, oceanographic, and ground based platforms. For Tokyo-FC, NASA will deploy their Langley Research Center G-III with a payload of two passive remote sensing instruments: the GEOstationary Coastal and Air Pollution Events (GEOCAPE) Airborne Simulator (GCAS) and Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer-5 (AVIRIS-5). These measurements will be complemented by a Diamond Air Service King Air contracted by Japan’s NIES to measure in situ observations of CO2, CH4, and NO2, as well as for testing a new NO2 remote sensor developed by the JAMSTEC. The resulting dataset will be crucial for refining retrieval algorithms and ensuring the scientific integrity of the GOSAT-GW mission's climate data records.
